Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States of America. He was born in 1809 and died in 1865, when he fell to the hands of an assassin, while in a theater in Washington. Lincoln came from poor people and grew up under harsh laws. He was born in Kentucky, but moved from there as a child with his parents, first to Indiana and later to Illinois, where he lived for the longest time in the city of Springfield. At a young age he lost his mother, but later had a kind stepmother, who became his mother. Lincoln was largely self-educated, studied law and practiced law in Springfield. Lincoln's wife was Mary Todd and they had three sons, one of whom died in infancy. Lincoln was elected President of the United States in 1860 and re-elected in 1864. During his presidency, the Civil War raged in the United States. The issue was whether slavery should be allowed or prohibited. The Northerners, under Lincoln's supreme leadership, fought for the freedom of all men and won. The Emancipation Proclamation was one of Lincoln's greatest victories.
