Pétur Gunnarsson is one of the most respected and popular Icelandic writers. His first novel, "Punktur punktur komma strik", was published in 1976 and attracted well-deserved attention. In it, Pétur interpreted in an innovative way the views and experiences of a new generation of Icelanders who had grown up on the gravel after World War II. Pétur turned sixty in mid-2007. On that occasion, the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Institute of Literature of the University of Iceland organized the Pétursþing, a conference where a group of scholars and writers reviewed Pétur's works, reflected on individual works, and discussed their content and position in contemporary Icelandic literature. (Bókatíðindi 2008).
