Grandparents. Eyjólfur Guðmundsson from Hvoli tells the story.
Eyjólfur Guðmundsson of Hvoli in Mýrdal was born on August 31, 1870 at Eyjarhólar in the same village (Dyrhólahreppur). His father, Guðmundur Ólafsson, was from the priestly family of Sir Högni in Breiðabólsstaður, a well-known man in his time as a farmer and seafarer, but at that time this was needed along the southern coast of the country. It is believed that Eyjólfur's grandfather Ólaf was the first to build a farm on the Eyjarhóla farm on Pétursey, and many of Eyjólfur's memories were tied to that place, as can be seen from various things he has written, although the family did not settle there. — Guðmundur's wife, Eyjólfur's mother, was Guðrún Þorsteinsdóttir from Úthlíð in Biskupstungur, and that family was a strong and famous one.
Eyjólfur á Hvoli married Arnþrúður Guðjónsdóttir from Þórustöðir in Eyjaíirður in 1904, a distinguished woman. They had 6 children, and 5 of them survived to adulthood, 3 daughters and 2 sons: Anna (unmarried) at home, Ingveldur married to Daníel Guðbrandsson, a farmer in Kerlingardalur, Steinunn married to Sigurjón Árnasson, a farmer in Pétursey, Guðmundur (unmarried) a farm manager at home, and Sigurður, now also at home, married to Sigurbjörg Guðnadóttir from Háisi in Fnjóskadalur.
Eyjólfur á Hvoli was the best farmer and the couple made their farm a manor and a model in land and house improvements. It can truly be said of Eyjólfur, who was naturally quick-witted, unwavering in all endeavors and endowed with good talents, and had acquired some school education (he was young at Flensborg School), that he soon became everything, as mentioned, in his village and generally in the social affairs of Mýrdæling, and he did it all well. He was a district governor and a member of the county council at the age of forty, both with an excellent reputation and rare popularity. — he had a seat on the local council of Dyrhólahrepp at the age of fifty and was a leader there for many years. He was also among the pioneers of the progress of the district and the province, and on the boards of all the associations in those matters in his district, whether they were construction or education, such as educational matters, business matters, church matters and agricultural matters. Such a long list would be if it were detailed here, but his colleagues will well remember the great contribution and special interest that he made to the progress of those matters from the beginning until recent years.
