The Theory of Relativity. By Albert Einstein. Translation: Þorsteinn Halldórsson. Introduction by Magnús Magnússon.
There are few who have not heard of Albert Einstein, the author of the Theory of Relativity, and it is needless to introduce this greatest physicist of the 20th century, as his name has long become synonymous with genius. However, fewer understand the theory of relativity itself, which became the new foundation of physics and has had such a profound influence on modern worldviews, philosophy, and science.

In this book, originally published in 1916, Einstein presents the general and special theories of relativity in a clear and relatively accessible way. In fact, before the theory was published, he had already made achievements in the field of physics, including writing fundamental papers on quantum theory, although he believed that the theory was lacking for the most part. The theory of relativity arose from Einstein's efforts to find general and universal laws that he believed could not be derived directly from facts. The limited and general laws of relativity are such laws, but Einstein soon realized that in order to present them, it would be necessary to revise common sense ideas about time and space and view them as four-dimensional space-time, otherwise it would be necessary to assume different laws of motion for someone in constant motion and someone at constant rest. The general law of relativity can be stated as follows: the equations describing the laws of nature are unchanged in all permissible systems connected to each other by general continuous equations of motion, and explains all behavior of objects in a gravitational field based on the properties of space without assuming forces acting on them.

Einstein's theories revolutionized physics, replacing Newtonian mechanics with the new theory of relativity. At the same time, the foundation was laid for a scientific cosmology that deals with the formation and history of the universe, and it is this type of physics in the 20th century that has most fascinated both laypeople and scholars. Few works in physics have as much relevance to those who want to understand the modern worldview.

In a detailed introduction, Magnús Magnússon describes Einstein's career, the main outlines of his theories, and his philosophical view of physics. This publication is followed by an afterword with an explanation of various aspects of the theory of relativity that were confirmed by experiments in the decades after the theory was first presented.
