Academic Rituals. Humanities and University Community. The author is Sigurður Gylfi Magnússon.
The book Academic Rituals is a monograph written like a thriller. It examines the inner workings of the university community; how institutions, representatives and scholars who are part of the University of Iceland make their decisions when outside parties knock on their doors. The author of the book, Sigurður Gylfi Magnússon, has a doctorate in history from Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, but last year he submitted a second doctoral thesis to the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Iceland. The farcical history of the case in the summer of 2007 is recounted in this book, which is a scholarly text in the academic sense, a defense in the legal sense and at the same time the author's personal statement about the humanities and university community.

The book discusses the appointment of a special jury for Sigurður Gylfi's work, examines the jury's opinion itself, and analyzes its detailed development. The disqualification of the chairman of the jury, Loft Guttormsson, to sit on the committee is discussed, along with the breach of confidentiality of another committee member, Einar Hreinsson, who leaked the committee's findings while the discussion at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Iceland was at its peak. The facts of the case are discussed through a combination of the publication of primary data (sources) and short connecting chapters describing the main points in the author's interactions with the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Iceland during the processing of the case. In between, there is a more detailed analytical chapter that goes into detail about the most important aspects, such as the jury's opinion, the general problem of the university community, and the eligibility rules of the Administrative Procedure Act; how scholars and the Ombudsman have discussed them in recent years. Much seems unclear regarding when scientists and academics are considered ineligible to serve on university-sponsored committees, but the book attempts to shed new light on these issues with a special legal commentary on the eligibility section of the Administrative Procedure Act.
