Alexander the Great has been in the minds of people since ancient times, and stories about him were spread far and wide, both throughout Asia and Europe. In the late 12th century, Galterus de Castellione, a French poet and scholar, wrote a Latin epic poem about Alexander, the Alexanderskviða, which traveled throughout Europe in the following decades. The Alexanderskviða was translated into Icelandic into a more informal language with such skill that later scholars and writers, from Árni Magnússon to Halldór Kiljan Laxness, have considered it one of the most magnificent works of the Icelandic language in terms of language and style. Alexanders saga, which has only been published once before in Icelandic, is being published here for the second time.
