Fredric Mallet, born in Stockholm on February 28, 1728, died on June 27, 1797 in Uppsala, was a Swedish astronomer and mathematician. He was an astronomical observer at the Uppsala Astronomical Observatory 1757–1773, and a professor of mathematics at Uppsala University 1773–1794.
The Mallet family in Sweden is descended from the Huguenots who left France at the end of the 17th century to escape the persecution under Louis XIV. Fredric Mallet's father Frans Mallet was a tobacconist and his modern name was Catharina Höök. During his student years at Uppsala University, where he enrolled in 1745, Mallet was the best student of mathematics professor Samuel Klingenstiernas and astronomy professor Mårten Strömer. He was also privately tutored by Pehr Elvius, who praised him and saw to it that he became a subject at the Vetenskapsakademien in 1749, where he later became an ordinary member in 1759.
Since Mallet was promoted to master in 1752, after a treatise on the planet Mercury, he assisted the suitable docent Klingenstierna and Wargentin in their mathematical and astronomical work and in 1754, shortly after he was appointed docent, he went on a scientific trip to England and France with a stipend. In England, he worked as a link between the famous telescope manufacturer John Dollond in London and Klingenstierna, who were then working on trying to create an achromatic objective for telescopes. In France he took part in en gradmätning.
On his return, after a three-year stay abroad, he was appointed astronomical observer at the Uppsala observatory, where he would stay for sixteen years despite the low salary and lack of equipment - the instruments at the Celsius observatory were so sensitive that they trembled when horses passed by and the sights were obscured by the smoke of the chimneys in the neighboring houses. He had to, for his livelihood, work extra as an informant for the young Claes Julius Ekeblad.
Mallet performed many astronomical and meteorological observations. Astronomically, his observations of the transits of Venus in 1761 and 1769 at Pello in Tornedalen can be mentioned in particular. His published works consist of mathematical and astronomical essays in the Proceedings of the Vetenskapsakademiens and Vetenskapssocieteten in Uppsala, in the Royal Society's "Philosophical transactions", and he also published many academic theses.
Mallet wrote as a member of the mathematical-astronomical part of the work published by the Cosmographic Society in Uppsala Fysisk beskrivning över jordklotet, among other things Kort beskrivning om globers nytta och bruk (1762) and Allmän eller matematisk beskrivning om jordklotet (1772). He was also responsible for the creation of the celestial globes published by the company, made by Andreas Åkerman, which for its time were very accurate and widely distributed abroad.
