The Althingi member and the don. Poem by Kengon.
This poem was famous in 1924-1925, first among the Hafnarstudents. Professor Jón Helgason wrote it about the Althing member Jakob Möller who had had a bad experience in Copenhagen when he was supposed to speak at a meeting of the Student Association. Jón did not like Jakob, could be harsh on people, and of course brought a lot of style. But the poem was unstoppable after it had been written, it was given in Reykjavík under the title Althingismänní og dóninn af Kengon. It was then printed in the poetry book Úr landsuðri in 1939. Jón omitted it from later editions of the book.

You, the jewel of the Althing, who glows and shines,

in gold and frankincense and myrrh,

For a moment I thought you were a pig,

Now I regret such a mistake.

How blatantly wrong it is to think of you,

What a stupid farce to suspect

a moderate earner who hates all wine

I probably should have remembered that!
