Apocryphal writings are writings of uncertain origin, or writings that are not fully recognized or authorized by the church. They were sometimes called exaggerated gospels in Icelandic, but have also been called secret books. Apocrypha (also Apocryphal books or Apocryphal books of the Bible) are extrabiblical writings; that is, writings that are close to the accepted books of the Bible but are not included in their number. The ancient Greek adjective ἀπόκρυφος (apokryphos) actually means "that which is hidden." In another place, apocryphal writings are sometimes spoken of when referring to writings that are close to a certain collection in content and form, but are for some reason not included.
The Apocryphal books of the Old Testament were included in Icelandic editions of the Bible from 1584 to 1859 (except 1813), but were then omitted because the British and Foreign Bible Society did not support Bible editions in which the Apocryphal books were published.
