Ariasman. A Tale of Whalers. A novel by Tapio Koivukari. Translated by Sigurður Karlsson.
Ariasman – a tale of whalers by Tapio Koivukari is a historical novel about the Spanish massacre when 31 Basque castaways were killed by Westfjords farmers in the autumn of 1615 under the leadership of Ari Magnússon, the sheriff of Ögar. The story of the massacre and its aftermath is told here from the perspective of both Icelanders and Basques. Shortly before the fishermen leave Reykjarfjörður in the autumn, a severe storm hits, and then begins a series of events that end in the catastrophe that is still considered one of the greatest acts of ineptitude in Icelandic history. (Bókatíðindi 2012).
