Tómas Grétar Ólason was born in Reykjavík on February 11, 1935. His parents were B. Óli Pálsson from Ytri-Skógar, Austur-Eyjafjöllum, and Anna Tómasdóttir from Barkarstaðir in Fljótshlíð. Tómas Grétar started working for Jarðýtan sf., his father's company, at a young age, but started his own business in 1964. Tómas Grétar always worked in social affairs. He was a scout from the age of nine. In 1969 he joined the Ægi Lions Club, which supports, among other things, the activities of Sólheimar in Grímsnes. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon on June 17, 2004, for his work in charity and social affairs.
