Jón Halldórsson (1838–1919) was born in Ytrineslönd in the Mývatn region and grew up in Grímsstaðir in the region. He immigrated to the United States in 1872 and lived most of his life in Nebraska. Jón wrote in newspapers about his journey west and settlement. He corresponded with many people. This book reprints Jón's writings in newspapers and magazines and a selection of his preserved letters. To supplement Jón's account, letters from his wife, acquaintances and friends containing material relevant to his story are included. These are sources about the life of one of the first Icelandic journeys west. The texts are accompanied by explanations, comments and photographs taken by Jón's son, Thomas E. Halldorson.
