Wasteland. A novel by Anna Ragna Fossberg.
Three sisters grow up in Reykjavík in the 1920s and 1930s. The eldest became one of Reykjavík's most glamorous daughters. Her life took an unexpected turn when she died at a late age, along with her husband and young daughter on a distant shore. The youngest was given wisdom and sensitivity as a cradle gift. Her fate was as cruel as that of the eldest, but it was not unexpected, but gnawed slowly and bitingly.

The middle child was born with a mild developmental disability. There was little hope that she would live long and have a future, but that was to be seen. After the middle daughter's long and eventful life, it became her role to share the story of the family, which consisted not only of the parents and three daughters, but also of two adopted children; a British-German boy who was taken into the home after his parents were arrested for espionage during the war, and then a girl who was raised as the fourth daughter and did not learn the truth about her origins until many years later.
