Disasters such as volcanic eruptions have befallen the Earth and humanity since the beginning of time. Volcanic eruptions transform the environment and human life, creating and destroying alternately until nothing happens.
In this book, Dr. Bjarni F. Einarsson, an archaeologist at the Icelandic Institute of Archaeology, discusses various disasters, especially volcanic eruptions, that humanity has endured over the centuries and their impact on culture and human life. The focus is on the medieval settlement of Bær in Öræfim, which was destroyed in an instant in 1362 when Öræfajökull erupted. The eruption was of the same magnitude as the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, which destroyed Pompeii and other cities in Italy.
Archaeological research was conducted in Bær between 2002 and 2009, and the results are presented in the book.
