Anna graduated with an MA in 1942. She studied in England and Sweden between 1945-47, including an internship at the BBC in London.
Anna was a teacher at Akureyri Primary School 1942-1945. She headed the educational department of KEA 1948-1949. She lived in Copenhagen 1952-1958 and worked in office work at Flugfélag Íslands 1952-1954. She worked for the longest time at the Icelandic National Broadcasting Corporation, 1959-1970, and worked mainly on children's programming. She has presented a variety of radio programs since then. Anna worked in management at Sólarfilm from 1972 until she retired due to age.
She wrote regular articles for the newspaper Dag á Akureyri (1942-1952), also for two years for Samvinnun, and was on the publishing board of Húsfreyjann for 7 years. She translated several children's books and published six books of poetry.
Anna married Birgur Þórhallsson, former managing director and owner of Sólarfilm, in 1949. They had three children, Snorri Sigfús, pianist and composer, Guðrúna Sigríður, flutist, and Þórhall, violinist and owner of Sólarfilm.
