Baldvin Einarsson and his work in national politics. Compiled by Nanna Ólafsdóttir.
Baldvin Einarsson, a lawyer, editor and natural science student, was born in Molastöðir in Fljót on August 2, 1801. He was the son of Einar Guðmundsson, a commissioner in Hraunur in Fljót, and Guðrún Pétursdóttir from Skeiði in Svarfaðardalur. A number of well-known engineers have descended from them.

Baldvin was considered a very hardworking young man, taking on all the jobs on his parents' farm when he was old enough and becoming the foreman of his father's shark ship when he was 17. He studied under the Reverend Jón Konráðsson, attended Bessastaðaskóli from 1822-25, was a clerk for the county magistrate Grímur Jónsson, graduated with a law degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1831 and studied natural science at the University of Applied Sciences in Höfn.

Baldvin was the editor of the journal Ármanns á Alþingi, together with Þorgeir Guðmundsson, but Baldvin wrote most of the material and four volumes of the publication were published. That publication is often considered to mark the beginning of the independence struggle in the 19th century.

Baldvin's works include Essay on the Maintenance of Birch Forests, which was published in Copenhagen in 1827 and in Icelandic translation in Reykjavík in 1848, and Bemærkninger om den gamle islandske Lov Graagaasen, but that essay was not published until after Baldvin's death, in 1834.

Baldvin had a literary dispute with Rasmus Kristian Rask that involved CC Rafn's translations of the Jómsvíkinga and Knytlinga sagas.

Baldwin married a Danish woman, and their descendants live in Germany. Baldwin died on February 9, 1833, from wounds he received when he caught fire in a bed in Copenhagen.
