Guðmundur Arinbjörn was born in November 1918 and died in July 1984. His parents were Guðrún Jónína Arinbjörnsdóttir, a housewife in Hyrningsstaðir, and Jón Hansson, a farmer in Hlíð in Þorskafjörður. Guðmundur lived with his mother in Hyrningsstaðir from 1947 to 1954, but then moved to Reykjavík and has lived there ever since. Guðmundur's common-law wife was Jórunn Helgadóttir from Gvendarstäðir in Þingeyjarsýsla and they were childless. Guðmundur published the poetry book Barmahlíð at his own expense in 1970, which is his only book under his own name, but before that he had had Kosningadropi published under the pseudonym Naglbítur Kolbeins .
