Beitilyng. Poems by Jórunn Ólafsdóttir from Sörlastöðir. Beitilyng is Jórunn's only book from Sörlastöðir.

Jórunn Ólafsdóttir was born in Sörlastöðir in Fnjóskadalur on May 8, 1920. She grew up there with her parents and lived with them except for her years of study at Akureyri Secondary School from 1939-42 until she moved to Akureyri with her father and brother in 1956 after her mother's death.
Jórunn first worked at the Iðunn Shoe Factory and later in collections and other jobs for Dag et al. for about 15 years, but spent a long time at Kristneshæli due to illness.
Jórunn was for many years the chairwoman of Sjálfsvarnar, the patients' association at Kristneshæli, and was heavily involved in the social work of SÍBS. She also supported abstinence issues and held confidential positions for the Akureyri Animal Welfare Association.
Jórann was fond of her childhood in Fnjóskadalur and was buried in Illugastaði Cemetery.

Christmas at home.

I remember that evening, a small candlelight

I was radiant, like a beautiful heavenly sun.

In my heart a rose of joy grew

and gave me the most precious peace that life bore.

I remember the one who kept a long vigil,

How the complexion lightened and the voice and bearing softened,

is a group of friends singing Christmas carols

and then dad read a holy message.

And my mother walked happily through her town

and gave gifts and lit lamp by lamp,

In return she received a smile and the deepest thanks.

- then I felt a rose growing at every step.
