Benjamín HJ Eiríksson was born on October 19, 1910, and died on July 23, 2000.
He graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1932 and studied at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin from 1932 to 1933, where he witnessed the Nazi seizure of power. He then studied in Uppsala, Sweden from 1933 to 1935 and at a secret party school, the Western School in Moscow from 1935 to 1936. He graduated from Stockholm University in 1938, where one of his teachers was Gunnar Myrdal. Benjamín worked in Iceland for the next few years. He had joined the Communist Party and then the Socialist Party, but resigned from it in 1939 to protest the party's support for the Soviet Union under Stalin.
Benjamin studied economics at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis from 1942 to 1944, where one of his teachers was George Stigler, and at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1944 to 1946, where one of his teachers was Joseph Schumpeter. After receiving his doctorate from Harvard, he worked for the International Monetary Fund, but returned to Iceland in 1951 and became an economic adviser to the government. He was governor of the Icelandic Development Bank from 1953 to 1965, when he retired for health reasons.
Benjamin left behind many articles, essays, and op-eds, some of which were collected in Rit 1938–1965, which was published on his eightieth birthday in 1990. Professor Hannes H. Gissurarson wrote his biography, which was published in 1996.
