Úlfur Friðriksson was born as Wolf von Seefeld in Degahlen in Courland/Latvia in 1912. His family was of German descent and lived for many centuries in Courland but had to flee the country during both the First and then finally during the Second World War. Úlfur went to school in Riga and went to university there and to Berlin in history and archaeology. When he moved to Germany after the Second World War, his circumstances changed and he studied gardening and worked at it first in Germany, then in England and then in 1955 he moved to Iceland. Here he worked as a gardener in Biskupstungur, in Eyjafjörður, in Hveragerði and then in the Reykjavík cemetery, most recently in the cemetery on Suðurgata.
