Rock slide. By Ólafur Jónsson.
Ólafur Jónsson's last major scientific publication was Berghlaup, published in 1976. In Skriðuföllur og snjöfloður he had discussed somewhat about "ancient landslides" from the mountains, which he called so, because the vast majority of them had occurred in prehistoric times. After 1957 he concentrated on researching these large landslides, which he gave the Icelandic scientific name berghlaup. He traveled far and wide across the country, examined the landslides and made various observations, measured the height of the fall and the angle of the slide, examined the rock type, estimated the area and volume. He also estimated their age, using, among other things, observations of the volcanic rocks. He researched place names, described the landslides, drew longitudinal sections and took photographs. Ólafur originally intended to make a comprehensive inventory of all the major landslides in the country, but he did not have the stamina to do so, having reached the age of sixty when the work began. However, he managed to describe over 200 races in words and pictures. The book was published by the North Iceland Breeding Association on his eightieth birthday in 1975.
