Bertel E.Ó. Þorleifsson (1857-1890) was born in Kelduland on the Skagaströnd coast but grew up in Reykjavík. He sailed to Copenhagen and enrolled at the University of Copenhagen but did not finish his studies. Bertel was one of those responsible for publishing the magazine Verðandi, which was a messenger of realism in poetry. His poems were published there. His poems and translations also appeared in other magazines.
