Rauni was born in 1943 in Utsjoki, Finland, the youngest of 13 siblings and grew up in her parents' house until she was confirmed, when she began to support herself. Utsjoki is on the east bank of the Tana River, which shares borders with Finland and Norway. The river valley is inhabited by Sámi people on both sides of the river, which is why it is considered Finnish on one side, Norwegian on the other - but nowhere Sámi! Sámi children were not taught their native language in schools. Rauni Magga Lukkari did not learn to write her native language until she was in her forties, when she was studying Sámi studies at the University of Tromsø.
