Pétur was born on Ytra-Hólmur in Innri-Akraneshrepp on August 2, 1888, and died on December 16, 1968. His parents were Oddgeir Ágúst Lúðvík Ottesen, a farmer and merchant there, and his wife Sigurbjörg Sigurðardóttir, a housewife.

Member of the board of the Icelandic Agricultural Association from 1942 until his death and of the board of the Icelandic Fishing Association from 1945–1966. Auditor of the Icelandic Agricultural Association 1937–1945. Appointed in 1951 to a committee to make proposals for general banking legislation. Member of the board of the Cement Factory from 1961 until his death.
