Júlíana Jónsdóttir was the first Icelandic woman to publish a work of fiction in Iceland. The poetry book Stúlka was published in Akureyri in 1876. She lived in many places around the country and then moved to the Western Hemisphere.
Júlíana Jónsdóttir was born on March 27, 1838, at Búrfell in Hálsasveit. She grew up with her paternal grandfather and his wife at Rauðsgil in Reykholtsdalur.
After working on farms in Borgarfjörður from a young age, she moved to Akureyri in Breiðafjörður in her twenties and worked there as a maid for 14 years for Rev. Friðrik Eggertz.
From Akureyri she moved to Stykkishólmur, where she worked various jobs.
Around 1885, Júlíana moved to the West. She first lived in North Dakota and Winnipeg, but then moved to the Seattle area. She earned a living as a domestic help and babysitter. She spent the last year of her life living with an Icelandic couple in Blaine.
Júlíana died on June 12, 1917.
In 1876, Júlíana published the poetry book "Stúlka" at her own expense. She also wrote the play "Vig Kjartan Ólafssonar" and it was staged in Stykkishólmur in the winter of 1879. Júlína played the main role, Guðrúna Ósvífursdóttir. The play is out of print.
Júlíana's second book of poetry, "Hagalagðar", was published 40 years after the first, in 1916 in Winnipeg.
