Gunnar Pálsson (1714-1791) was the son of a pastor from Upsum on Upsastrond. He graduated from Hólar School in 1735 and was a deacon at Munkaþverá for a while. In the winter of 1740-1741 he stayed in Copenhagen and completed his theology degree from Hafnarháskóli in the spring. He was a schoolmaster at Hólar from 1742-1753 and then pastor at Hjarðarholt in Laxárdalur until 1784 and also provost until 1781. In the last years of his life he was engaged in teaching children at Reykhólar and died there.
Gunnar Pálsson was one of the leading poets of the 18th century and wrote in both Icelandic and Latin. He was involved in ancient poetry commentary for the Árnanefnd in Copenhagen and enjoyed a high reputation as a scholar. Two of Gunnar's contemporaries said that he had been talkative, witty, small in stature, but yet brave in appearance and strength, also that he had been a strange man with drops and sips, but a good man and kind.
