The British are coming. By Thor Whitehead.
The story begins when two fishing boats and two destroyers enter the Sound near Reykjavík late at night or early in the morning on this May day almost sixty years ago. Then begins a series of events that will change Iceland forever, not only so that Icelanders began to make a real recovery after the crisis but also so that perspectives changed, Iceland was no longer an isolated island in the middle of the Atlantic but in the middle of a major conflict. Power in the North Atlantic was based on having influence and facilities in Iceland. This book traces the first actions of the British army in Iceland and the reaction of the Icelanders to the occupation. It is not without reason that the book begins with a quote from Pál Ísólfsson, the church organist, who said on the morning of May 10, 1940, "Now everything has changed."
