The buildings at Skálholtsstaður are a maze of winding paths. Although the main buildings are arranged from west to east along the ramparts, from the Bishop's Hall and the Bishop's Bath, through the Guest House, and the School Hall and the school itself to the east, it is not a straight path inside the buildings, but rather a series of passages. When young men were sent west to the barracks in Fremristofa, they often said that eternity could not be as long as the passages here at Skálholtsstaður. Walking and navigation were still a challenge if one had business at the southern buildings, the Children's House, the Old Dining Room, the Great Hall, the Women's Bath or the Workers' Hall. Out there lay a formidable long passage called the Long Passage, which was not the most comfortable for men's footwear in long, wet weather.
There was still a cluster of all kinds of houses to the south, and there was not a hut or outhouse so poor that it did not have its own name. For this reason, if anyone wanted to retreat into some secret shelter, he was slow to get there, and all the more so if that person had something under him.
