Dr. Jón Gíslason (1909–1980) is well known to the Icelandic public for his academic and scholarly work. He completed his doctorate from the University of Münster in Germany in 1934, with his final thesis on Virgil's Aeneas. Seven years later, he was appointed the first permanent teacher at the Commercial School and became head teacher there a year later. At the Commercial School, Jón proved to be a pillar of strength, teaching Latin, French, German and English, among other subjects. He then served as principal from 1952–1979. Jón is the author of several important works on classical Greek and Roman culture, as well as translations of Euripides, Sophocles and Aeschylus. He was also responsible for
publication of Sveinbjarn Egilsson's Homer translations together with Kristnir Ármannsson.
