Eggert Claessen (1877–1950) was one of the most influential figures in Iceland in the first half of the last century. He was a close colleague and advisor to his uncle Hannes Hafstein and his brother-in-law Jón Þorláksson, a business partner of Thor Jensen and Sturlubræðri, and a lawyer for Einar Benediktsson. He was one of the main founders of the Eimskip Company, participated in the historic Millionaire Company and was a key figure in the Titan waterfall company. He was then the senior banker of Íslandsbanki for almost a decade. As the managing director of the Icelandic Employers' Association, he was the face of employers for years. Eggert was highly regarded by his colleagues for his intelligence and diligence, but his opponents saw him as an "enemy of the people" and "the head of the capitalists".
The story told in this book is based on extensive research of previously unknown primary sources about his work and colorful life, full of ups and downs, joys and sorrows, happiness and adversity.
