Diary of a trip to Iceland in 1810. By Henry Holland. Icelandic translation and annotations by Steindór Steindórsson from Hlöður.
Henry Holland traveled in the summer of 1810 with the Scottish scientist Sir George Mackenzie, the medical student Richard Bright and Ólafur Loftsson, an interpreter and guide. The following year, 1811, Sir G. Mackenzie published a detailed book about the trip. It was adorned with many illustrations that the companions had drawn here. Mackenzie's travel book became one of the best-known books about Iceland, and was published in a total of 4 editions in England, and was also translated into other languages.

Henry Holland was only 22 years old when he traveled here. He had completed his medical degree that spring, but the following year he received a doctorate for a paper on diseases in Iceland. Dr. Holland later became a very well-known physician in England, personal physician to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was also a very active traveler, and the Iceland trip was his first long-distance trip. He always had a very warm heart for Iceland and the Icelanders after this trip. He visited the country again in 1871, at the age of 83, but he died in 1873.

The diary begins in Orkney, first telling of their journey from there to Reykjavík, where they arrived on May 7. They then stayed in Reykjavík until May 21 and got to know people and things, attended a dance here, visited many homes, especially Holland, who practiced medicine here for a little while, paid a very memorable visit to Ólafur Stephensen in Viðey, etc.
On May 21st, their 11-day journey through the South Peninsula began, then they went on a month-long journey through Borgarfjörður and Snæfellsnes, and finally a three-week journey east of the mountains, arriving at Þingvellir, Skálholt, Geysir, riding all the way up to Hrafntinnuhraun and hiking on Hekla. But between trips, they usually stayed for a few days in Reykjavík.
