Dalarósir. Two fairy tales by Guðmundur Hjaltason.
Guðmundur Hjaltason was born in Ásbjarnarstaðir in Stafholtstungur in 1853. It was to his advantage that there was a good library there and he had a lot of freedom to read. At the age of 16 he went to his mother's house at Kvíakot in Þverárhlíð. And it was there, despite being considered a full-fledged worker, that he had the opportunity to get his hands on good books. When his mother died, Guðmundur went to sea, first in Akranes and later in Seltjarnarnes. He was there doing fishing and general work for four years, but then the farmers in Seltjarnarnes and the secretary Jón sponsored him to go to study at the folk high school in Gausdal in Norway. Guðmundur had recently published the poetry collection Fjóludalur, and it must have attracted the attention of people, including the secretary Jón. Guðmundur stayed in Norðurlóngar until 1881, when he returned home. During his years of study in Norway, Guðmundur wrote about Iceland in newspapers and magazines. When he returned home, Guðmundur took up teaching and gave classes and lectures in many places around Eyjafjörður, for example in Litlahamur, in Laufás and in Akureyri. In the summers, Guðmundur worked as a farmhand for Reverend Arnljótur Ólafsson and several other farmers. During the years that Guðmundur was in Eyjafjörður, he published the books Melablóm, Jökulrós and Dalarósir. He also wrote quite a bit in Norðanfara, Fróði, Norðurljósið, Uppeldisritið and Austra. In 1903, Guðmundur went to Norway and did well there. He gave 550 lectures in 170 youth clubs and 50 lectures in 10 schools. Guðmundur spoke there on both Icelandic and general topics. He also wrote a lot about Iceland in Norwegian newspapers and magazines. Upon returning home, Guðmundur settled in Hafarfjörður. Guðmundur died in 1919.
