Danmark-Ekspeditionen was a Danish expedition to Greenland's northeast coast in the years 1906-1908. It was conducted under the leadership of polar researcher and author Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen.
The expedition left København with the ship Danmark on June 24, 1906 and reached the Greenland coast at 76°46' N.br. on August 17, 1906. The place was named Danmarkshavn, and the house Villaen was built here, which, together with the ship, was the base for the expedition's activities for the following two years.
Danmark-Ekspeditionen's main task was to map the coastline of the still unknown northeastern Greenland. An important element in this mapping was to find out whether Peary Land was more or less connected to Greenland itself. If Peary Land should turn out to be an island, the USA could claim it, because the American Robert Edwin Peary was the first to set foot on it. In addition, the expedition had undertaken geological, botanical, zoological, meteorological, oceanographic and archeological studies. After the expedition, the extensive results were presented in a long list of scientific publications.
But one of the participants was the German physicist and meteorologist Alfred Wegener, who later achieved great fame. It was precisely in connection with the Danmark-Ekspeditionen that Wegener got the idea and later developed the theory of continental drift.
The later known polar explorer, Peter Freuchen, participated as the youngest member of the expedition. For a period of half a year, he was stationed almost 100 km from Danmarkshavn in a small hut set up in Pustervig, where he would read meteorological measurements every two to three hours around the clock.
