Þorsteinn E. Jónsson's flying career spans 47 years, almost half a century. He has over 36,000 flying hours, including about 450 hours on the Spitfire, Britain's main fighter aircraft during the war. He learned to fly in the army and participated in British air raids during the war, such as the invasion of Normandy and North Africa. Þorsteinn was awarded 6 medals of honor for bravery during the war.
"Thorsteinn says he has had a passion for flying since he was a little boy. At the beginning of the war, there were no flying lessons in Iceland. His only opportunity to learn to fly was to join the British Royal Air Force. He says it is difficult to name the most dangerous flight. It was often a game of life and death. I was a lucky one. The vast majority of my comrades, who started at the same time, did not survive the war," says Thorsteinn.
