The Danish Lady of Klepp is the story of the Copenhagen girl Ellen Johanne Kaaber who, against the wishes of her family, travels to Iceland in the dead of winter in 1909 and marries Þórður Sveinsson, the chief physician of the newly established Klepp Hospital. The book is based on correspondence and deals with Ellen's growing up years, her marriage and her residence here. Ellen and Þórður's love letters are the focus of the book, and their backdrop is the Icelandic struggle for independence and contemporary literature.
