On April 10, 1665, two father and son were burned at the stake in Skutulsfjörður. They were accused of persecuting their parish priest with witchcraft and causing him great suffering, both mental and physical. The trial and execution were attended by two magistrates, Magnús Magnússon of Eyri in Syeðisfjörður and Þorleifur Kortsson, who has made the most significant contribution to the history of Icelandic witchcraft persecution.
The priest Reverend Jón Magnússon wrote his Píslarsoga about these events, in which he sought to justify his actions. That book is a defense and only expresses the priest's point of view. In the novel Dauðamenn (The Dead), Njörður P. Njarðvík has recreated the story of the father and son who were burned in a dramatic and exciting narrative.
