The most unfortunate. Life stories from Kristiania. Memories of Ólafíu Jóhannsdóttir.

Ólafía Jóhannsdóttir was born in 1863 in Mosfell in the Mosfellssveit region. She was placed in foster care in Viðey at a young age and later with her maternal aunt, Þorbjörg Sveinsdóttir, a midwife in Reykjavík. She grew up with this extraordinary woman. Ólafía's story is intertwined with the story of Icelandic women in the early nineteenth century and before the turn of the century 1900. It is also the story of a strong-willed woman who always went her own way and when all avenues seemed closed, she found her freedom and lifeline in faith in a loving God. Through this, she made a home for herself among prostitutes, the poor and the drunkards of Oslo.

Ólafía is a national celebrity in Norway for her work there, but she is less well known in her home country. Few know that she was a pioneer of the Icelandic women's movement, a revolutionary and a cosmopolitan who traveled widely and met both traditional ladies and down-to-earth women.
