The Deep. A novel by Steinar Sigurjónsson.
Steinar Sigurjónsson is one of the most important Icelandic writers of the second half of the twentieth century. His early works struck a tone that had not been heard before in Icelandic literature. The materials were new – the grey mold of the seaside village that stifles man’s desire for beauty – and the methods were the same: Steinar was in a way the pioneer of modernist storytelling in Iceland, but he was also a notable poet.

Steinar's first book, Here We Are, was published in 1955. His major works include Love Story, Mixed in with Black Death, Get Away from the Shadow, and The Cellar. Steinar also wrote numerous plays and one-act plays, some of which have been performed on the radio.

He wrote his works not only under his own name but also under the pseudonyms Steinar á Sandur, Sjónir Sandur and Bugði Beygluson.

Steinar's place in Icelandic literary history has not been what it should be, although it is clear that he is a pioneer in this field and has had a valuable influence on younger authors. There are many reasons for this. His outsider status in life seems to have played a role, as well as his works being on the cutting edge, works that are in a way unique in Icelandic literature in the 20th century. They are endowed with the rare quality of being avant-garde while at the same time seeming to spring naturally from the poet's environment, as a reflection and reaction. In this respect, Steinar is akin to several of the most significant modernists of the 20th century in the field of fiction.

Steinar Sigurjónsson was born on March 9, 1928 in Hellissandur. He moved to Akranes at a young age and grew up there. Steinar learned printing at Hrappseyjarprent and Prentverk Akranes and graduated as a printer from the Akranes Vocational School in 1950. He worked exclusively at his craft for several years but then turned to writing, sometimes in parallel with printing. Steinar Sigurjónsson died in Holland on October 2, 1992.
