Guðný Sigurðardóttir was born in Reykjavík on August 22, 1915. She was the youngest of six children of Kristín Jónsdóttir and Sigurður Gíslason.
Guðný attended the Women's School in Reykjavík. At the age of twenty-one, Guðný married Þórður Benediktsson, they had two sons and lived in Reykjavík all their lives.
Guðný wrote in her spare time and her stories were read on the Icelandic National Broadcasting Corporation. The short stories "Minnisleysi" and "Kirkjugjald" were published in Eimreiðinn in 1941.
Guðný won two prizes in short story competitions and three of her novels were published.
In a memoir about Guðnýja, Kristín Sigurðardóttir says that Guðnýja's stories were characterized by "sensitive human understanding, warmth and playfulness with a serious twist."
Guðný died on March 20, 1978, at only 63 years old. (www.skald.is)
