Eleanor was born in Calgary, Canada. Her mother was Helen Sveinbjörnsson (1892–1979), the daughter of Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson (1847–1927), Iceland's first composer and author of the national anthem. After Eleanor married Dean Oltean in 1948, they worked as farmers in Saskatchewan until they settled in Calgary in 1985. Like her mother Helen and her maternal uncle Þórður, Eleanor was very artistic; she wrote poetry, published children's books, and held more than 30 art exhibitions. Eleanor was childless and bequeathed family records to the Icelandic National Museum.
