Haraldur Jóhannsson was born in Reykjavík in July 1926. He graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1946 and completed a master's degree in economics from the University of London in 1956. He then took a BA in history from the University of Iceland in 1986. He was an economist at the Economic Affairs Committee for a time in 1956, was chairman of the board of the Export Fund 1957-60 and chairman of the board of the Partial Insurance Fund 1959-62. He was also a lecturer at the universities of Malaya 1964-68 and Johannesburg in South Africa 1969-71. Haraldur was an economist at the State Construction Agency from 1973-1977 and worked on independent projects after that. Haraldur was one of the main economic advisors to the left-wing government of Hermann Jóhannsson in 1956-58.
