A call that matters
News of the murder spread across the country at the speed of light, and if reporters had not described the events in such detail that they were true, Viktoría Jónsdóttir would hardly have come forward the same day. Pulled herself together, as she put it herself, called and said that she had a story to tell that probably had all the power to change the course of the case. In fact, all kinds of gossip rang the station, filled with all kinds of hand-wringing and mysterious clues. Because of them, Viktoría was asked whether hand-wringing, visions or dreams had any bearing on what she had to say. We apologize, ma'am, but we are forced to ask, said her interlocutor. With her answer, she seemed to remove all doubt: I only believe what I touch and see with my own eyes and I have never taken note of any hand-wringing, she replied with a sneer and at the same time said that she wished to speak to Kjartan Gunnarsson when she arrived at the station. It was decided to grant her wish and she was invited for an interview at noon. But then she gave a detailed report. At first her voice trembled somewhat and her eyes were flickering and wet. But as the story progressed, she strengthened and finally became more deliberate: I am not used to testifying in criminal cases, she said and since she was also not used to speaking into a tape recorder, she elaborated her case as best she could. She said that she had always been precise and would therefore not leave out anything, not even what seemed at first glance to be of little importance. Many small things make a big deal.
