Like the Sea. A novel by Fríðu Á. Sigurðardóttir.

Yes, there is always something going on here. News comes from the south that the new government has blown the right to strike out of the water and is revoking the agreements in order to save the nation from itself, that the old lady in England has won yet another election victory on the back of unemployment and other misery, and the Pope is in Poland doing everything wrong there, but what is that compared to watching the doctor's wife, that Diljá skin, the daughter of the old doctor Jón, run aground in the middle of Iceland on the very National Day and not be able to get back afloat? It was tragic to watch. The priest and the school principal had to help her down from the platform, saying that she had had a stroke. Which perhaps could be said to be true. Yes, it was tragic to watch the mountain woman herself run aground like that on this significant day. And they all have great sympathy for Diljá, because being subjected to such humiliation in public is absolutely no joke, although somewhere behind the sympathy there may be a little mischief hidden.

Yes, things have certainly been going on here, and August is still continuing his wicked love affair with Swan; he is openly living his depraved life on the farm without seeming at all upset. The last time they were heard from was a few nights ago by the lake in Dal. Bathing. They were just swimming there naked, it is said. Not so much as frolicking around. And the town waits with bated breath to see what happens next, because something must happen, this can't go on like this, there must be a limit. But nothing happens. August walks around as cheerful and jovial as usual, and Swan continues to deal in the textile goods in the merchant's shop as she is used to, that's all. And love continues to disturb the townspeople, annoying, aggressive and corrupt; but still somehow alluring. Some people find it. Who have no sense of honor.
