Kitchen Scams. A novel by Guðlaug Arason

"We know that marriage is nothing more than a bargaining chip and has never been anything else. It is a trade in security, loyalty and money. Whoever has a worse product to offer will be the loser, and with few exceptions, this is the case with women. Marriage is inherently a petty bourgeois business, where the man rules over the woman. For the one year that I lived with the late Baldur, happy memories, I felt like nothing more than a slob, pure and simple slob. I gave up my sex life, cooking and laundry; he had an apartment and provided me with financial security. In fact, he needed me much more than I ever needed him, and I think men generally have a harder time being alone than they do with women. But our relationship was like a regular business, with the books between my legs, where everything was either debited or credited, there was the checkbook that was taken out if the foundations of the business were shaken; the CEO had the opportunity to to closely monitor the operations, and there the monthly accounts were made ... which always got on the CEO's nerves. I know women who go straight to work and sell themselves to men for hard cash. Most of them are unmarried. But the majority of married women make a living by living with men and selling themselves under the pretense of being married to them.....
"Ninety-nine percent of married women in Iceland are kitchen wretches... I'm not going to get off on that."
