Elding. First volume 1901. Everything published by Elding. Editor Jón Jónsson, cand. phil.
Jón Jónsson from Mýrarhús in Seltjarnarnes took the family name Aðils. He became a respected historian in the early 20th century and is well respected, although his work is now considered to be imbued with the narrow-mindedness of the independence struggle about noble Icelanders and evil Danes. But Jón was a man of his own making and in 1901 he published a remarkable newspaper, Eldinga, in which he wrote, among other things, about nationalism and warned against extremes in that field, he advocated women's rights, shamed naughty teenagers and other "scoundrels" and wrote about the harsh treatment of Reykjavík residents in the cemetery in the city center, which we are now told is one of the holiest places in the country.
