Torfhildur was born in Kálfafellsstaður in Skaftafellsýsla on February 2, 1845. Her parents were Þorsteinn Einarson, a priest, and Guðríður Torfadóttir. Torfhildur studied English and needlework in Reykjavík. She married Jakob Hólm, a store manager in Hólanes in the north, but became a young widow when her husband died after one year of marriage. Torfhildur moved to the West in 1876 and her first novel, Tárablómið, was published in 1879 in the western Icelandic newspaper Framfara.
