Memoirs of a Mountaineer. Some travel memoirs by Þórður Guðjohnsen.
About Thordur Gudjohnsen by Jakob Gudjohnsen.
All pictures in the book are drawn by Þórður Guðjohnsen.

The author of this short essay was raised in a neighborhood where high coastal cliffs jut out into the sea, while mountains and high heaths lie behind. Then we move on to wilderness and wilderness, all the way to glaciers. Here were the best conditions for getting to know the rocks and mountains, and many hours were spent doing so when other duties were completed. I can thank my father for his liberality in that direction. He was always of the opinion that boys should not be kept indoors if they were not to become skunks, and he occasionally took part in our brothers' mountain hikes. My first mountain hike was on Húsavíkurfjall, which was only 417 meters high at the time, and I must have been 7-8 years old at the time. But when I grew up, I used most of my summer vacations to travel in the mountains. What a young person learns, an old person learns. My love of mountains and wilderness has remained undiminished into old age. But I've never really touched the peaks. Most of my trips have been just long hikes in mountain ranges and over passes.
