Memoirs of Guðrún Borgfjörður. Editor Anna Agnarsdóttir. Agnar Klemens Jónsson writes an afterword to the previous edition. Helgi Ingólfsson writes an appendix.
The memoirs of Guðrún Borgfjörður provide a rare insight into the life of a commoner who grew up in Reykjavík in the second half of the 19th century. Here a vivid picture of Guðrún's childhood home is created and the reader is given an insight into her everyday life, both joys and sorrows, the entertainments of the time and her travels within and outside Iceland. The memoirs are no less interesting because Guðrún was well acquainted with various notable people of her time, both women and men, who have later gained a place in Icelandic history. Here you will also find accounts of historical events, such as the national festival of 1874 and the theft in the Laugarnestofa, and a contemporary description of the furore surrounding the news of the Katanes beast.
