In the preface, the author traces the publication history of this little piece about the handicraft teacher Erling Jónsson. Originally, this birthday article was to be published in Faxi. But that didn't happen because Faxi didn't publish birthday articles unless the birthday was a dozen or so years old. But this article is written on the occasion of Erling's 45th birthday. Then Guðmundur tried Suðurnesjatíðindi and despite promises of publication "many issues of Suðurnesjatíðindi have been published". Then Guðmundur says: "Since I will not let anything stop me from honoring my friend Erling at the age of 45 with this article, I feel compelled to publish it here in booklet form, especially since it looks like it won't fit in any magazine and I don't understand how that can be possible".
