The Ear Demon. A novel by Jóhann Árelíuz.
The book is set in Akureyri in the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the most turbulent times in the country's history, when foreign cultural influences dominate the country and the political landscape is marked by great upheaval. Society is changing rapidly and a deep divide has formed between generations. The heroes of ancient legends are giving way to American pop idols and English footballers. Jóhann succeeds very well in conveying this spirit of the times in often humorous descriptions. All of this is crystallized in the main character, the boy Jóhann, who finds nothing more enjoyable than singing rock hits, slurping soda, licking apothecary liquorice and reading Bob Moran, for example. The stories of the endless antics of Jóhann and his friends are a very entertaining read and no doubt many will recognize the objects, characters and atmosphere of the past.
